This past BBC Jazz Vocalist of the Year has recorded an entire album of Joni Mitchell songs. This is an honourable exercise, with Shaw's vocals sounding warm and passionate. Mitchell, of course, had her own jazz leanings, but Shaw avoids that phase of her career. Instead Chelsea Morning is speedy and scat-tinged and A Case of You steeped in yearning. He negotiates the cool complexity of Edith and the Kingpin with style. A heartfelt album.
